Aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the WFF plays a crucial role in contributing to several key objectives outlined by the UN.

Our impact

Quality Education - SDG 4

Together with our valuable partners at the Wildlife Forensic Academy, we ensure accessible wildlife forensic training for local rangers, students, and law enforcement to help safeguard forensic evidence and increase prosecution levels. We take action by providing scholarships to carefully selected applicants and supporting research opportunities in the field of wildlife forensics and anti-poaching innovations. We aim to create a ripple effect for forensic knowledge, enabling continuous education and skill development among the communities of students attending the WFA, as well as increasing preventative actions against poaching. Education and knowledge-sharing are key components of our mission, contributing to the broader global effort for inclusive and quality education.

Life Below Water - SDG 14

Did you know that poaching is also prevalent in marine animals such as abalone, sea turtles, and sharks? Additionally, underwater and shore-based methods are being developed for investigators to link perpetrators to this crime. At WFF, we take action towards protecting marine and coastal ecosystems within SDG 14 by seeking funds for research initiatives and innovations in the field of forensic science technologies aimed at preserving the delicate balance of underwater ecosystems and combating illegal activities that pose risks to marine biodiversity.

Our holistic approach recognizes the interconnectedness of terrestrial and marine environments, emphasizing the importance of preserving biodiversity across both realms. Together with our ongoing efforts on land, our commitment to marine forensic science underscores our dedication to comprehensive conservation practices that transcend geographical boundaries.

Life on Land -SDG 15

As the second-largest driver of species extinction, wildlife crime is a focal point in our commitment to SDG 15. We actively contribute by ensuring the accountability of criminals involved in the illegal killing of animals, striving for successful prosecutions. Through our wildlife forensic training, research support, and innovation, we enhance preventive measures against the depletion of biodiversity. Our community-centred approach and ranger training programmes further establish a positive cycle of environmental stewardship. By educating and empowering local communities, we promote sustainable land use practices and combat habitat degradation.

Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions - SDG 16

Our efforts are also intricately aligned with SDG 16, dedicated to fostering peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development. Specifically, in the pursuit of Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, WFF focuses on combatting wildlife crime, a threat often tied to organised criminal networks also involved in drug and human trafficking. Our initiatives involve training and empowering law enforcement, rangers, and law enforcement authorities, contributing to the establishment of robust institutions capable of effectively addressing and prosecuting wildlife criminals.

Additionally, we empower local rangers and institutions, calling for inclusive decision-making and effective governance, engaging local communities in wildlife conservation efforts. Finally, our objectives is to significantly diminish corruption and bribery through the impact of wildlife forensic investigations on the supply chain of illegal wildlife products.

Partnerships for the goals - SDG 17

We align our goals and efforts with SDG 17, which emphasises the importance of partnerships for sustainable development. WFF actively engages in partnerships with innovative projects, such as the Wildlife Forensic Academy, to enhance its impact in combating wildlife crime. By collaborating with institutions and initiatives that promote forensic knowledge, research, and innovation, WFF contributes to building a global network committed to addressing the complex challenges of illegal wildlife trafficking.

These partnerships strengthen the foundation for achieving sustainable development by fostering cooperation, knowledge exchange, and the sharing of best practices. Through collaborative efforts, WFF aims to amplify the effectiveness of its initiatives, promoting a united front against wildlife crime and advancing the broader goals of environmental conservation and biodiversity protection.
